How to Shake a Negative Mindset and Make an Impact on Your Day

When negative circumstances come up, your experience can throw off your whole day. You may become angry or frustrated at the situation and let it lower your work performance. However, since you can reshape your brain based on the behaviors you feed it, you’re able to tap into your command center to reverse the effects of negative energy. Here’s how to shake a negative mindset and make an impact on your day. Smile

Shake off your negative thoughts by smiling. Smiling activates parts of your brain associated with positive emotions. Neural pathways link your facial muscles to parts of your brain. Movement in your face affects the signals you send to your brain. Smiling activates the muscles on both the right and left sides of your face, which affects the right and left hemispheres of your brain. Since your left hemisphere processes positive emotions, smiling helps you feel happy.

Seek Natural Light

Improve your mood by going outside or finding a window or some other source of natural light. Natural light improves the biochemistry of your brain. Your retina tells your pineal gland whether it’s light or dark outside. If it’s dark, your pineal gland secretes melatonin to trigger sleep. Too much melatonin decreases your serotonin level, which is responsible for mood balance. Low serotonin leads to negative thoughts. In contrast, if your retina registers light, your pineal gland secretes serotonin, norepinephrine and other hormones that promote positive feelings. This is why sunlight helps you feel happy.

Monitor Your Self-Talk

Control what you mentally say to yourself. Your neurons are wired to accept the statements you tell yourself. Your brain’s left hemisphere processes the language and narratives you feed it, then interprets them as positive or negative. Shifting your narratives from negative to positive can rewire your neurons with a positive perspective. Your left hemisphere then passes the input to your right hemisphere, which interprets the information into a whole picture. Because your thoughts shape your actions, you become what you think. Your brain interprets your thoughts as commands, causing your body to respond accordingly.

Take a Walk

Incorporate movement into your day. Movement promotes the oxygenation of your blood. When your heart actively pumps blood, it promotes flow to your brain to help you feel calm and alert. Movement also increases the performance of norepinephrine, which increases your heart rate and brain function. This boosts your mood and improves your thinking. You’re better equipped to process information, respond to challenges and perform better.
