The Key to Setting (AND ACHIEVING) Your 2020 Professional Goals

In addition to key performance indicators your company may set for you and your team, you should create your own professional goals. Knowing what you want to work toward and putting a plan into action help you develop your career in the direction you want. The more decisions you make for yourself, the better you feel and the harder you work. Follow these guidelines to set and achieve your 2020 professional goals. If a new finance job is in your plan, be sure to reach out to Alliance Resource Group, one of the top recruitment firms for finance professionals.

Choose Three Goals

Focus on the three biggest goals you’d like to achieve this year. You’re better off zeroing in on a handful of objectives you truly want to reach than overextending your time trying to attain too much. Take time to brainstorm what you want to attain in the next 12 months. When you’re done, narrow your list to your 10 biggest objectives. Cut them down to five, then three. Talk with colleagues, friends or your significant other for guidance.

Positively Word Your Goals

Write your goals using positive words. You need to mentally put yourself in the position you want to work your way there in reality. Positive visualization is beneficial when you don’t get what you want right away. You’re more inclined to try again or attempt something in another manner to achieve desired results. Whether you want to request a 10% increase in salary, move to top-tier leadership level or reach another objective, word your goal as you’d like it to happen.

Create Your Action List

Write down the steps you need to take to reach your goals. Be sure each action is attainable and related to your goal. If a task seems too challenging, break it down into smaller tasks. For instance, if you want to earn a promotion, write down the benchmarks you need to reach and skills you must learn. Include a timeframe for finishing each task to determine whether you’re making progress. Specify how you’ll measure progress toward your goals, such as completing a certain number of tasks.

Reflect on Your Goals

After creating your goals, give yourself some distance from them. Take a week to give your brain a rest by not thinking about what you want to achieve. Creating space helps clear your mind. When you revisit your goals, determine whether you picked the right ones. If they still resonate as what you want to focus on, start on your way to achieving them. If your goals no longer speak to you, go back and rewrite what needs to be changed. Repeat the process until you feel comfortable. Then get started attaining what you want.
